Lithium-ion Batteries

With a discharge efficiency ranging between 80% and 90%, lithium-ion batteries perform well under standard conditions but may experience higher discharge rates at elevated temperatures. They are commonly used as replacement batteries for cordless drills and other power tools.

One characteristic of lithium-ion batteries is their inclusion of flammable electrolytes, making them potentially hazardous due to the risk of fire or explosion. Despite this, they are favored for their lightweight design and high energy capacity. Lithium-ion batteries are extensively utilized in drills, saws, sanders, garden tools, and other equipment. Their application extends to vehicles and telecommunication sectors as well, demonstrating their versatility and popularity.

On the environmental side, lithium-ion batteries contain toxic metals that pose ecological risks. However, the recyclability of these metals and the solvents used in the batteries helps mitigate resource depletion and environmental harm. Moreover, lithium-ion batteries lack the "memory effect," offering a more convenient user experience compared to other battery types.


Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH) Batteries


Nickel-metal hydride batteries, while not as energy-dense as lithium-ion batteries, exhibit other advantageous properties. Their lower energy density means a reduced capacity compared to lithium-ion batteries in the same volume. However, NiMH batteries offer greater consistency and enhanced safety performance, making them reliable in applications requiring stable operation.

These batteries can deliver a discharge capacity exceeding 15%, effectively meeting the operational demands of electric tools. NiMH batteries are heavier and less compact than lithium-ion options, but they are more cost-effective, both in terms of manufacturing and market prices.

On the downside, NiMH batteries have poor low-temperature performance compared to low-temperature lithium-ion variants, such as lithium iron phosphate or lithium polymer batteries. This makes them less suitable for use in cold climates or low-temperature environments.


Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO₄) Batteries


Lithium iron phosphate batteries stand out for their high-temperature resistance and exceptional discharge performance, reaching levels above 30C. They perform well across normal and wide temperature ranges, making them a robust option for power tools.

Compared to NiMH batteries, lithium iron phosphate batteries offer superior low-temperature performance, higher energy density, and longer service life. They also lack the "memory effect," providing a more seamless user experience. However, the technology for lithium iron phosphate batteries still lags behind in some areas, such as consistency and safety, compared to NiMH batteries.

While they may not yet achieve the same reliability in consistency and battery pack safety as NiMH batteries, lithium iron phosphate batteries remain a promising option, particularly for applications requiring durability and long-term efficiency.
